You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, yet you speak words of wisdom. The wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead.

O son of Kunti, the contacts between the senses and their objects give rise to cold and heat, pleasure and pain. These come and go and are impermanent — learn to endure them.

Know that to be indestructible by which all this is pervaded. No one can cause the destruction of the imperishable soul.

He who thinks that this (soul) is a slayer, and he who thinks that this (soul) has been slain — both of them fail to perceive the truth. This soul neither slays nor is slain.

The soul is never born nor dies at any time. It has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primordial. The soul is not slain when the body is slain.

Just as a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, similarly, the soul accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

The soul can never be cut by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor dried by the wind.

For one who has been born, death is certain; and for one who has died, birth is certain. Therefore, you should not grieve about the inevitable.

Fight for the sake of duty, treating pleasure and pain, loss and gain, victory and defeat as the same — and you will incur no sin.

In this path, there is no loss of effort, nor is there any adverse result. Even a little practice of this spiritual discipline protects one from great fear.

You have a right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself the cause of the results, and never be attached to inaction.

Perform your duty equipoised, O Arjuna, abandoning all attachment to success or failure. Such equanimity is called yoga.

One who is endowed with wisdom casts off both good and evil deeds even in this world. Therefore strive for yoga — yoga is skill in action.

O Partha, when a man completely casts off all the desires of the mind, and is satisfied in the Self by the Self alone — he is said to be one of steady wisdom.

One whose mind is not disturbed even in the threefold miseries, who is not elated when there is happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear, and anger — is called a sage of steady mind.

One who is able to withdraw his senses from sense objects, as the tortoise draws its limbs within the shell, is firmly fixed in perfect consciousness.

By contemplating sense objects, a person develops attachment to them. From attachment arises desire, and from desire comes anger.

From anger comes delusion, from delusion bewilderment of memory, from bewilderment of memory destruction of intelligence, and from destruction of intelligence one falls down.

One who has no self-control has no wisdom, nor concentration. Without concentration there is no peace, and without peace how can there be happiness?

Just as rivers flow into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is undisturbed — so too the person who remains undisturbed as all desires flow into him attains peace, not one who strives to fulfill desires.

That man attains peace who, abandoning all desires, moves about without longing, without the sense of 'mine,' and without ego.

This is the transcendental state, O Partha. Having attained it, one is never deluded. Established in this state even at the time of death, one attains liberation into Brahman.

O Partha, do not yield to unmanliness — it does not become you. Give up this petty weakness of heart and arise, O conqueror of enemies.

My nature has been overcome by the taint of cowardice. My mind is confused about what is right. I ask you what is decidedly good for me. I am your disciple — please instruct me. I have surrendered to you.

Just as the soul passes in this body from childhood to youth to old age, so similarly at the time of death the soul passes to another body. The wise are not deluded by this.

The Vedas are concerned with the three modes of material nature, O Arjuna. Rise above these three modes. Be free from duality, ever situated in the mode of goodness, free from thoughts of gain and safety, and be established in the Self.

The unreal has no existence, and the real never ceases to exist. The truth about both has been seen by the seers of truth.

Though the embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment, the taste for sense objects remains. But ceasing even this taste, the higher taste is found by seeing the Supreme.

But one who controls the mind, and who moves among sense objects with senses free from attachment and aversion — he attains tranquility (prasada).
